On December 8, SEZ Adventure Club successfully organized Phase 3 of the Pekoe Trail, a challenging yet captivating hike that brought together 34 enthusiastic participants. The group set off at 3:00 am from Burhani Park, Husaini Masjid, embarking on an 18.11 km trail through Sri Lanka’s breathtaking central highlands.
The adventure began at the historic Loolkandura Estate, widely regarded as the birthplace of Ceylon tea, established by Sir James Taylor. Crossing a small bridge over the Ma Oya, the hikers entered a trail steeped in history. The climb, which included an elevation gain of 748 m, took the group along the forgotten Dimbula road—an ancient pathway once used by horses and bullock carts over 150 years ago.
As the group ascended, the surroundings became increasingly remote, with the dense forest and sprawling tea plantations offering a sense of tranquility and timelessness. Reaching the highest point at 1,586 m, the hikers were rewarded with stunning views of the Kotmale Reservoir, the Rilagala mountain range.
The trail then led through the scenic Stellenberg Estate, where estate roads wove between lush tea bushes and shaded forest groves. Along the descent, the group encountered iconic sights, including the Ramboda pass and waterfall, as well as the winding Gampola-Nuwara Eliya road.
Despite the physical challenges, the participants’ spirits remained high, motivated by the camaraderie and the natural beauty surrounding them. After a descent of 1,026 m, the hike concluded in the vibrant town of Tawalantenne, marking the end of an exhilarating journey that celebrated the region’s history and landscapes.
SEZ Adventure Club continues to inspire a love for outdoor exploration, fostering community and resilience through unforgettable adventures like these.
